The Bushland Falcons racked up more than 7,700 yards total offense this season and averaged nearly 48 points per game as they advanced to the Class 2A Division II state championship game.
Receiver Crockett Gillmore accounted for a good portion of those numbers, and he did it despite playing a limited number of minutes on offense.
That's because he was one of the best defensive players in the Panhandle, and as an end was part of a four-player rotation on offense.
The numbers he put up were simply outstanding. He wound up with 45 pass receptions for more than 1,100 yards and 22 touchdowns. That's right, he caught a TD pass for just about every two receptions he had.
While that statistic is not generally kept, it would certainly rank as one of the best in this area.
''Crockett has been such a steady performer for us these last four years,'' said Falcons head coach David Flowers.
''He has come such a long way as a player. He has improved every year, and he is one of the hardest workers I've been around.''
Gillmore already has committed to play at Colorado State University, where he will join former teammate Weston Richburg.
''Crockett has the size to probably play either on offense or defense in college,'' said Flowers. ''He is tall enough and has great hands to be a tight end.
''He also has the size and strength to play on defense, too.''
Gillmore, like the rest of his teammates, was disappointed to lose the state title game against Daingerfield.
''They were a great team, and we didn't play as well as we could have,'' he said. ''Their speed and quickness were probably the difference.
''Still, we had a great season, and it's something we can take a lot of pride in. We were able to achieve so many of the goals that we set for ourselves. About the only one we didn't get was winning that final game.
''This team set the bar high for other Bushland teams to follow. I would love to see future ones get back to a championship game and win it.''
