LUBBOCK - Dumas coach Mike Burt knew San Angelo Lake View quarterback John Baker was talented, and Baker showed just how talented he was in Lake View's 33-25 win over Dumas in the Class 3A bidistrict playoff Friday night at Lowrey Field.
Baker finished with 163 yards, two rushing touchdowns and one passing TD. Baker was 4-of-13 for 80 yards and one interception.
Burt said he was worried all week about Baker, but he wasn't the only one that hurt the Demons.
"They had a whole bunch of tough guys to bring down," Burt said. "I told y'all they had thunder and lightning in the backfield. You had Bucky Richardson, or whatever you call him, back there. That had me worried all week."
The Demons took a 25-14 lead early in the fourth quarter after a 10 play drive that ended with a 2 yard run by quarterback Aaron Thomas.
Dumas' chances of advancing looked good, until Baker dropped back on the first play of the drive and delivered a 70-yard dagger to Paul Mesta, who had gotten behind the Dumas secondary and was wide open.
The momentum gained from the one-and-done drive put the Demons in a hole they couldn't escape.
Burt was happy with his defense, until they gave up that play.
"The defense gave us a great chance to win," Burt said. "But the defense also gave up a long play. I have a hard time understanding how you can let anybody get behind us when we have gotten the lead and they've got the wind. I want somebody to explain that to me. How do let somebody get behind you?"
The Demons offense had sputtered in the last month of the regular season, but gained 238 yards against Lake View.
Ricky Inthirath moved the chains steadily for the Demons, finishing with 116 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown. Dumas had a fourth-and-4 at their 43 when Inthirath broke free for a 31-yard carry to set up the Demons last TD.
Dumas defensive back Aaron Heyd picked off a Baker pass and returned it for a touchdown to give the Demons a 19-14 lead late in the third quarter.
The Chiefs countered with an interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter when Barry Noriega picked off a Thomas pass and returned it 15 yards for a 26-25 lead that Lake View would maintain for the win.
